The education a child with a disability receives can act as a major factor in the quality of the experience transitioning to employment and community living. Unfortunately, both schools and parents are often uninformed about various requirements of special education law and best practices in educating students with disabilities. Parents are not often trained in special education issues or informed about their rights and responsibilities in the process and as a result, have significant difficulty navigating the system as an advocate for the needs of their child.
The Arc of Nebraska's Education Committee was developed to assist families and school districts in ensuring that children with disabilities receive quality educational services appropriately tailored to their needs. The Education Committee serves as a statewide resource to members of local chapters and as a direct advocacy resource where there are no local chapters. The Education Committee focuses on special education issues for both parents and professionals; develops and distributes fact sheets and other resources and training materials for parents and professionals; provides trainings and technical support to the local chapters of The Arc of Nebraska and member families; provides trainings for parents and parent groups throughout the state; and works directly with parents who need assistance with special education issues.
